Arts & Performances

Kyoto is a birth place of traditional arts, crafts and performances of Japan,
and has been maintaining its tradition with the coming of the new age.
Here GTK'd like to introduce the monthly art highlights, museums, creators etc.

300th Anniversary of Ito Jakuchu

To celebrate the 300th anniversary of Ito Jakuchu’s birth (1716-1800), Kyoto National Museum will be displaying a collection of some of his most acclaimed works. Featured are works not previously displayed in other museums, including the folding screen, depicting 6 poets from the Heian Era. His sense of humor comes across in his painting of Buddha’s passing away (photo below) in which Buddha is represented by the central radish, surrounded by vegetables which symbolize the crying animals from the original painting. As well as this exhibition the museums collection has a wide range of works, including sculptures, calligraphy, ceramics, picture scrolls, among others.

Alongside the Jakuchu collection, Green Tour Kyoto recommends “Early birds-Celebrating the year of the rooster”, commencing on the same day and in the same building. This collection displays a variety of birds, depicted as symbols of prosperity and longevity, from the past.

Why not visit the museum to welcome in the New Year?
