Kyoto National Museum 120th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition National Treasures: Masterpieces of Japan
2017 is the 120th anniversary for both Kyoto National Museum and the cultural heritage term “National Treasure”. In 1897 Kyoto National Museum opened, and the following month the term “National Treasure” was used for the first time, as part of the newly enacted Law for the Preservation of Old Shrines and Temples.
To celebrate this remarkable anniversary, Kyoto National Museum will present a special exhibition, featuring approximately two hundred National Treasures, including painting, calligraphy, sculpture, and decorative arts, among others.
Most notably, Sesshu’s six ink paintings designated as National Treasures will be displayed in a special room (October 3-22), along with “Wind God and Thunder God Screens” (October 3-29) and “Kakitsubata-zu (Irises)” by Ogata Korin.
It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the most beautiful and significant works in Japanese history.
