Saigu procession

In ancient time, the custom was to select one princess to serve the god of ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture where the first god of Japan had been born. This princess was called “Saigu“. She departed Kyoto from Nonomiya Shrine with followers and then purified herself at the Oi River on the way to Ise Shrine. Today you can see the reenactment of this procession.
