Ito Jakuchu Exhibition
Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) was a popular painter in the Edo era, whose works are famous for their colorfulness and animal imagery.
His family ran a grocery at Nishiki Food Market in downtown Kyoto, but he decided that painting would be his life-work and studied Zen Buddhism and Zen Art at Shokoku-ji Temple. He incorporated techniques from the Kano School, Rinpa, and China into his painting style and perfected his original style and technique later in life.
In this exhibition, many works by Jakuchu and other paintings and crafts from the Edo era will be displayed.
