The Zen Buddism was inherited from India to China by Bodhidharma about 1500 years ago. After that, it was spread by Rinzai Gigen who was the founder of the Rinzai Zen sect and Obaku Zen sect and then arriving in Japan during the Kamakura Era (1185-1333).
The Zen Buddhism was supported and worshipped by warriors as well as nobles, even the imperial families and influenced society and Japanese culture.
This exhibition will be held to commemorate the 1150th anniversary of Rinzai Gigen’s death and 250th anniversary of Hakuin Ekaku, the Japanese Rinzai Zen sect who was revived the sect in the mid-Edo Era.
Approximately 20 national treasures and 100 important cultural properties including the portraits of Zen monks, the Buddha statues, calligraphic works, traditional handicrafts, among others will be displayed this time.
